2D Data Matrix and Barcode Marking


Many manufacturers are marking identification barcodes and 2d data matrix on their products for safety issues, government and state regulations, and reliable tracking throughout the parts life cycle. Barcodes and 2d markings can ensure the products you manufacture meet all the quality, safety and global regulations that they are subjected to. While most items identified by barcodes are affixed with a printed paper label, direct part marking is a process by which a manufactured part has its identifying barcode marked on it directly and permanently. A 1d (one-dimensional) barcode is the typical style with which we are most familiar. All the information in the code is organized horizontally in bar and space widths and read left to right by a scanner. Several versions of 1d codes store only numerical data while others can encode additional characters. The height of the code varies based on the space available on a product and the ability of a barcode reader to read a small or large sized barcode.

Pin marking 2d data matrix

A 2d (two dimensional) codes store data both horizontally and vertically, holding significantly more data than what is possible with a 1d barcode. A 2d code is commonly referred to as a 2d data matrix, 2d dot matrix or a 2d barcode. A 2d code is capable of encoding up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters, or up to 3,116 numerical characters. It's composed of several blocks of cells, that come in either a square pattern or a rectangular one.


Reading 1D and 2D barcodes

There are several factors that affect the readability of a direct part ID mark. A curved or uneven surface will be more difficult to read a barcode from than a perfectly flat surface. Highly reflective surfaces are likewise difficult to read, unless a small textured patch to reduce glare is added for the barcode to be marked on. In any event, most direct part marking codes require advanced image-based readers in order to be scanned and read properly.
